(UN)RAPID PROTOTYPING

THE FOLLOWING IMAGES ARE ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING EXPLORATIONS FROM MY THESIS, TOWARDS A MARTIAN VERNACULAR: CLOSED-WORLDS AND INFRASTRUCTURES OF SOCIAL CONNECTIVITY. THE PROTOTYPES BELOW EXPLORED THE PROCESS IN WHICH 3D-PRINTING COULD BE USED TO BUILD INFRASTRUCTURAL ELEMENTS ON THE MOON AND EVENTUALLY MARS. 3D-PRINTING IS A GROWING AND INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY, BUT NOT EVERYTHING WE IMAGINE CAN BE 3D-PRINTED. IT IS AN ADDITIVE BUILDING SCIENCE THAT CREATES A DISTINCTIVE ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE. IT ALSO VARIES WITH THE MATERIALS FROM WHICH YOU PRINT WITH. THE CSALT (CARLETON SENSORY ARCHITECTURE AND LIMINAL TECHNOLOGIES LABORATORY) WITHIN THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AT CARLETON UNIVERSITY, SUPPORTED THE WORK CONDUCTED BELOW. THE 3D-PRINTER THAT WAS USED FOR THESE EXPERIMENTS WAS THE SCARA V4 AND CLAY WAS USED AS THE PRIMARY BUILDING MATERIAL IF 3D-PRINTING BECOMES THE DESIGN METHODOLOGY FOR THE FIRST SPACE BASED INFRASTRUCTURES ON MARS, THEN HOW MIGHT THIS NEW ARCHITECTURAL VERNACULAR SUPPORT HUMAN SURVIVAL?
